With his monthly allowance of Gh¢202.90 (about $119 then and $13.19 today) as a National Service Personnel (one year mandatory service upon completing tertiary in Ghana) in the late 2011 and early 2012, our founder Musah Frimpong birthed the idea of hosting a weeklong empowerment camp for Muslim Youth. This was to help fill the huge gap and low level of family, community, and institutional support available to the masses of Muslim youth he identified in his travels and engagements across the country with several organizations as a youth and student leader. His passion for this idea attracted other youth leaders from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Ghana, University for Development Studies among others who joined him to plan and host the maiden weeklong camp at Independence Hall, KNUST from 27th May to 3rd June, 2012 for 100 residential and 500 visiting youth.
Today there are about 2 billion young people between the ages of 15 to 35 globally, over 500 million in Africa and over 12 million in Ghana. There are about 2.5 million Muslim Youth in Ghana based on estimates from the 2021 population and housing census by the Ghana Statistical Service. These huge numbers represent opportunities if positivity harnessed and challenges of neglected. Majority of these Muslim youth are born, grown up and live in predominantly Muslim communities popularly known as Zango or Zongo across Ghana. These communities are generally deprived of socioeconomic opportunities. Efforts have been made and are still being made by successive governments and other stakeholders to improve the situation, yet much remains to be done. Progressive communities, institutions and nations place emphasis and invest in the training and education of the youth.
At VOMYED, we believe that, unless young people receive intentional training, mentorship and other critical investments, they cannot get the needed capacity to build and live responsible lives and become contributing members now and in the future in their communities. There is therefore the urgent need for the relevant resources, enabling environment, genuine support and mentorship to be made available for the multitude of Muslim youth across Ghana. We are committed to this cause and urge you to join us too because it is the right thing to do!
We envision a generation of conscious and positive Muslims through sound spiritual, moral, professional, social and cultural excellence and impact.
